DATO’ YONG CHAI SENG

Asiabina Group

Dato’ Yong Chai Seng founded the Asiabina Group in the late 1980s. With its roots in property development in Perak, it has grown to be a diversified conglomerate with five key pillars: property development, property investments, agriculture, renewable energy, and memorial.

Wishing to contribute to his home state, Dato’ Yong returned to Perak after graduating to join a local property development outfit. A few years into managing the company’s township project, he struck out on his own to establish Asiabina.

Under Dato’ Yong’s leadership, Asiabina has developed over 22,000 residential and commercial units. Dato’ Yong’s strategic vision extends beyond commercial gain; his commitment to serving the local community’s needs reflects his broader social responsibility and long-term thinking. He has made bold decisions, such as launching the first high-rise projects in Taiping and Ipoh, introducing the first modern mall in Parit Buntar and Taiping, and the first private memorial parks in Perak and Kedah.

In line with his belief in being ‘always prepared’, he has quickly seized emerging opportunities and diversified the group’s portfolio. In addition to investments in malls and hotels, he has ventured into durian plantations and renewable energy sectors, ensuring the company’s resilience and adaptability in changing economic climates.

Asiabina has developed 273-megawatt peak (MWp) solar projects, contributing significantly to Malaysia’s net zero and sustainability push. With more projects in the pipeline, the group is a recognised solar developer.

Realising Malaysia’s agricultural potential, the group has cultivated over 2,500 acres of durian and oil palm plantations in adherence to best practices for sustainability. This initiative ensures that Asiabina contributes to the nation’s food security and increases Malaysia’s prominence as a major durian exporter.

In the industrial sector, Dato’ Yong’s ability to spot growth opportunities led to the investment of industrial assets in Penang and Kedah and the establishment of industrial sites in Perak, with more industrial parks under development. These parks attract local and multinational corporations, helping to create jobs, stimulate local economies, and position Asiabina as a key enabler of Malaysia’s industrial growth.

One of the most unique aspects of Dato’ Yong’s leadership is his ability to identify and seize opportunities outside traditional business sectors. Under his direction, Asiabina developed and managed the largest memorial park group in Northern Malaysia, a testament to his foresight in recognising the importance of memorial parks in a growing and ageing population.

Asiabina’s footprint spans Penang, Kedah, and Perak and is actively expanding with landbanks and projects further afield. Its growth reflects Dato’ Yong’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and community development, which have been pivotal in shaping Asiabina into a diversified conglomerate with a strong foothold in various industries today.

True to Dato’ Yong’s commitment to giving back, the group regularly donates to educational and charitable causes. Dato’ Yong is also personally active in local community affairs, having served as SMJK Krian chairman for about two decades – which, oddly enough, neither he nor his children attended!

Dato’ Yong holds a Housing, Building, and Planning degree from the University of Sains Malaysia, Penang. He is a lifelong learner and holds professional certificates in the memorial and solar industries.
