DATUK SERI KENNETH H’NG BAK TEE
An alumnus, Datuk Seri H’ng acquired a Bachelor of Mathematics (Double Honours) in Computer Science and Combinatorics & Optimisation, complemented by a Master of Applied Science (Management Sciences) from the University of Waterloo, Canada. In 1986, he contributed to academic literature with two significant research papers: “Rolling Horizon Production Planning for Probabilistic Time-Varying Demands,” published in the International Journal of Operations and Production Management (UK), and “Production Lot Sizing for Deterministic Rolling Schedules” in the Journal of Operations Management (USA).
In 1985, commencing his professional journey with International Business Machines (IBM) in Kuala Lumpur as an information systems marketer, he transitioned to the Asia–South Pacific Area (ASPA) regional headquarters in Hong Kong as a technical analyst after two years. During his tenure at IBM, he attained the Manager’s Award for his singularly executed implementation of a new competitive tracking system across ASPA, aligning it with contemporary business exigencies.
In 1988, he received the Asia–South Pacific Area Excellence Award for a different role in successful business planning and development contributions.
In 1989, he returned to Malaysia, assuming the position of deputy general manager at Leader Cable Industry Berhad. His career trajectory continued to ascend as he became the group executive director of Leader Universal Holdings Berhad, a publicly listed entity on the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange, in August 1991. He advanced through the organisational hierarchy, ultimately serving as managing director from 1998 until February 2004; after that, he was appointed executive vice chairman until his subsequent appointment at GUH Holdings Bhd.
Datuk Seri H’ng is a fellow of the Institute of Approved Company Secretaries, an affiliate of the Malaysian Institute of Chartered Secretaries & Administrators, and a member of the Registered Financial Planner. His philanthropic endeavours are noteworthy, as he actively participates in various charitable organisations, serving as honorary director of the Buddhist Tzu-Chi Merit Society (Malaysia) and the Penang Teochew Association, among other affiliations.
In recognition of his exemplary leadership, Datuk Seri H’ng received the Brand Laureate Brand Leadership Award for 2017/18. He also secured a position as one of the top four nominees for the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year 2019 Award (Master Entrepreneur). His accolades continued in 2020 when he received the Asia Pacific Outstanding Entrepreneur Lifetime Achievement Award and the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2020 World Chinese Economic Summit.
In March 2023, Datuk Seri H’ng received the Penang Distinguished Icon Leadership Lifetime Achievement Award and the World Distinguished Business Leader Lifetime Achievement Award in December 2024.
